UNC formatted image

What is the best way of reading UNC formatted images (.unc) and the associated header from disk?

Can you point us to the definition of this UNC format?

It is apparaently a mysterious format, the only thing I have found is here http://www.xinapse.com/Manual/ : “The UNC format from the university of North Carolina Computer Science department (unclib). This data format was modified to include image information fields by David Plummer, University College London.”

Can you provide an example of this image? Or only its header? Neither me nor @vicory have heard about this format before.

Does the UNC format have any special feature that you must use; or is there a chance you can switch to more commonly used format, such as nrrd, metaimage (.mhd/.mha), or Nifti (.nii)?
