Email notification footer

Email notifications currently only include a link to unsubscribe.

“To unsubscribe from these emails, click here.”

  1. It is not clear what it is unsubscribing me from - from all ITK discourse emails, from all emails in that category, or from that single discussion thread? It would be nice to describe in the message what happens exactly if I click there.

  2. I often want to open the message in Discourse web interface so that I can see previous messages, see if someone else has answered the post, use the web-based editor etc. For this I would need a link to the post itself, too.

When you include two links in the footer, place them far from each other to reduce the chance users accidently click the wrong one.

This is the message footer In Slicer discourse:

[Visit Topic] or reply to this email to respond.
To stop receiving emails about this topic, category, or all discussions, [click here to unsubscribe].

I was just going to post the same thing!

I added back %{respond_instructions} that were removed following the Slicer configuration. Let’s see how that looks…

It looks like this now:

[Visit Topic] or reply to this email to respond.
To unsubscribe from these emails, [click here].

I would not dare to click on unsubscribe when the description is so vague. What “these emails” refer to - all discourse emails from all projects (ITK, Slicer, …), all ITK discourse emails, all emails in the category, all emails related to this topic…?

It would help if the message would be rephrased to make it clear what happens when you click the link, e.g., that you’ll be taken to a page where you can specify what to unsubscribe from. For example, I like the Slicer discourse message “To stop receiving emails about this topic, category, or all discussions, [click here to unsubscribe].” because you see that you have options to choose from.

To stop receiving emails about this topic, category, or all discussions, [click here to unsubscribe].

@lassoan Yes, that is a nice improvement. Do you know how to change that setting?

I don’t remember the name of the setting/field but on the admin interface you can search for fields that contain specific text. You can use that to find which field you have to modify.

The field that seems to be the one to modify for this is “respond_instructions” but I can’t find how to modify this.

Let’s seem if it works to have modified the User Replied template in the admin tab based on the information I found in server.en.yml

It worked, I got here by the link

Actually I don’t think it works the way I want it to work. The link to come to the topic works, but the unsubscribe footnote doesn’t seem to work the way I thought I had configured it.

Unsubscribe seems to work fine for me. It brings up a we page where I can unsubscribe from the topic or from the entire site.

Yes, the links work, but I was trying to change the text in the footer to be more explicit as you were suggesting, and right now I can have the new text I want with the correct links, but there is still the default “unsubscribe” text, so there is a duplication. I haven’t found a way to remove the default text yet. I posted a question on the discourse forum. I’ll see if I get an answer.

It should work now. I got the answer from the discourse forum on how to customize the text. If it is not exactly what you want, we can change it, it is easy. Thanks for the feedback!
