I’m trying to build ITK in Visual Studio 2019. I’m getting this error:
source\repos\ITK\Modules\ThirdParty\VNL\src\vxl\core\vnl\vnl_error.h(13,19): error C2144: syntax error: ‘void’ should be preceded by ‘;’
I’ve tried adding the /FS flag but this didn’t help…are there any other things I can do to get this to go away? I’ve also added an #include windows.h to the top of the file.

I am normally using VS2019, and normally compiling recent ITK versions.
Which version (sha1/tag) of ITK are you trying to compile, and which version of VS2019 are you using? Did you enable some non-default configuration options in CMake during ITK’s configure step?

Thank you so much for getting back to me. It looks like ITK has some nice mesh registration algorithms I need. It is encouraging that you are using VS2019. However, I’m about ready to just give up on all this because I have no idea what to do.

Can you do a clean build? That is, pick a new binary directory, configure and then build. Alternatively delete your current build directory, then configure and build afresh. Large in-place updates occasionally cause mysterious build errors.

I cloned the 5.1rc1 build into a clean directory.
I made a new separate build directory.
I use all the default settings in CMake. I just press configure then generate. I don’t set anything
(any suggestions about what I should set?)
642 projects are loaded there are fewer errors but a few libs still don’t fully build:

I just did a fresh build of 5.1rc1, configured using default options and it compiled without issue in Debug mode. Same (latest) version of Visual Studio as you, CMake 3.16.3, Windows 10 x64 version 1909, build 18363.592. I doubt it is CMake version but you can try the same as mine. Try repairing your installation of Visual Studio? I am running out of ideas.

thanks so much for getting me this far! I’ll try what you suggested. On my machine it does not like GDCM and HDF5 for some reason. When I get it, if I can isolate the issue I’ll let you know.

I go it all to build:
I installed hdf5 and gdcm with ./vcpkg then
I had to tell cmake to point to the system libraries.
I had to add a #include <windows.h> to the minc build for some reason it didn’t propagate.
It’s not super smooth but I do think I’ll be able to use the registration libs which is what I need.
We build ITK 5 latest release and RC using VS2019 IDE every day without problems. We use VS2017 toolset, though. VS2019 toolset is probably just too new so there was not enough time for testing and fixing build of ITK and all its dependencies.
You you building the x86 build or x64 Build?
If not specified, you should assume x64 build nowadays.
I uninstalled and reinstalled everything and now it builds with 0 errors 
Now to do some real work…
